When I was doing a masters in NCAD they hated my work. They did everything they could to make me change, but I had a vision of what my work should be and I stuck to my guns. Here I am many years later still making art. That was a defining moment for me. Just being myself no matter what the people in power think. I think it is an important message for all artists starting out.
My creative style is all about colour, bright and bold. I started using a lot of pink and green in my work back when I was screen printing and I ran with it. I wanted to show familiar landscapes in a new and exciting way. Bring extraordinary to the ordinary. I make so many things that never see the light of day, the trick is to pick out the best of what I do.
I can spend weeks and even months on a piece but sometimes it’s really great just to make something fast and fun and let your creativity guide you.
The Irish people are amazing for their support of the creative industry. People will go out of their way to buy Irish art and support Irish artists. I’ve met a lot of great people through the creative industry.
